Madd fruit grows on a vine in the African savannahs and takes over a year before being ready to harvest. They are picked after the first rains of the season, in April and May. The orange to brown coloured fruit has a hard spherical shell that contains seeds which are coated with a soft and juicy yellow pulp. The flavour is simultaneously tart and sweet.
It’s easy to find in the local markets, where it’s sold topped with sugar and/or salt and pepper. It can also be eaten neat but most people prefer to season the pulp.
Mixed with water and sugar, the pulp makes a delicious juice. It’s not advisable to swallow the seeds but the inside of the shell is covered with pulp that can be consumed.
Madd fruit is rich in vitamin c and also contains thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, malic acid, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.
In the region of Casamance in Senegal, bunches of roots from the madd plant are sometimes strung outside homes to protect the inhabitants from evil spirits.
