Coconut – sprouted

Description

We source the sprouted coconuts for culinary use only. The sprout is cut off at the base where it protrudes from the coconut shell so we do not believe they are suitable for growing your own coconut palm.

When a coconut falls from the palm it will eventually germinate and the coconut water inside the shell transforms to an almost unbelievable sponge-like consistency. The sponge is at maximum size around 20 to 24 weeks after germination.

The sponge-like flesh has a flavour which is a balance between salty, savoury and a little sweet. It can be eaten fresh out of hand but is also a versatile ingredient which can be used in various ways. Try slicing the sprout and using it in place of bread or breaking off small pieces and dipping into chutneys or pickles.
