Pomelo – red/pink flesh

Description

Although pomelo closely resemble grapefruit, they are a species in their own right. They are sometimes known as shaddocks, after the sea captain who brought them from Polynesia to the West Indies. Pomelo are the largest citrus fruit in the world, weighing up to 5kgs however most export quality fruits are around 1-2kgs.

Red flesh pomelo are less common. The exterior of red flesh pomelo is usually green to dark green. The flesh has more of a citrus flavour and less sweet but has little of the bitterness which is found in grapefruit. The pith around the segments is bitter, and not usually eaten.

Pomelo have a high concentration of vitamin C.

It is believed that consuming pomelo can help to cure the condition, acid reflux.
