Tamarind – velvet tamarind

Description

Velvet tamarind is a fascinating fruit which is commonly found in Africa and in some parts of Southeast Asia.

It takes the name velvet tamarind because of the smooth, soft velvet-like exterior.

The small thin pods are easily cracked to reveal a dry powdery flesh which surrounds a small shiny central seed.

The flesh is delicious and enjoyable to eat. It’s flavour is like candy and has some resemblance to the more commonly found sweet tamarind (tamarindus indica).

The seeds and pod are not eaten.
