Papaya – green (for salads)

Description

Green papaya is unripe papaya that is usually shredded to make spicy salads, particularly in South-East Asia.

It’s commonly used by vegans and vegetarians to create raw salads but meat and seafood can also be added.

Immature green papaya has crisp white flesh with very little flavour. It is prized mostly for its crunch and used primarily as a base for salads, most notably in the Thai classic som tam, where it serves as a bland backdrop for the powerful flavours of chile, lime, garlic, and fish sauce. Tasters characterise green papaya as “clean-tasting” and “like cucumber or jícama”.
