Mamey sapote (pouteria sapota)

Description

Mamey sapote fruit, technically a berry, has flesh ranging in colour from pink to orange to red. The brown skin has a texture like the fuzz on a peach but firmer. The texture is creamy and soft.

The delicious and complex flavour has been compared to a combination of sweet potato, pumpkin, honey, burnt sugar, caramel, peach, apricot, cherry, and almond. A mamey sapote is ripe when the flesh is a vibrant salmon colour. The flesh should be soft to very-soft.

It’s an excellent source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C, and is a good source of riboflavin, niacin, vitamin E, manganese, potassium & dietary fibre. Research has identified several new carotenoids from the ripe mamey sapote.
