Description
Fresh red dates are native to Egypt however the most extensive commerical cultivation now takes place in India and Pakistan. They are harvested in bunches on long yellow stems. They have a deep red to burgundy skin and are edible during all three stages of ripeness – khalal, rutab and tamr.
These speciality dates are usually larger than the more commonly found fresh barhi date and have a more fruity but slightly less sweet flavour.
If left at room temperature, they will eventually turn a brownish colour as they ripen, becoming very sweet, soft and chewy with a thin crisp outer skin.
