Banana – burro – fresh and frozen

Please note – the burro bananas are organically grown which means sometimes they may have faint black marks on the skin. They are caused by the natural latex that collects on the skin as they grow.

Please note – You will usually receive green burro bananas but sometimes they may be yellow. Please leave us a message during checkout if you require the burro bananas at a particular stage of ripeness.

The burro banana is occasionally sold under the name chunky banana as it is stubbier and more of a square shape than the common banana. Some are even completely triangular!

Burro bananas are grown throughout Mexico and The Philippines, however we source ours from the Caribbean. They are aptly named because their stubby stature is reminiscent to that of a donkey or ‘burro’.

The peel is a rich, vivid, dark green that turns deep yellow with characteristic black/brown spots when ripe. When young, the flesh of the burro banana is tart and tangy with notes of apple and lime.

As the fruit matures, the yellow flesh is soft on the outside with a slightly crisp textured center. A ripe Burro banana’s flavour is creamy and sweet with lemon undertones.

Burro bananas are known as a dual-purpose variety. They can be enjoyed fresh when fully ripe or used green like a plantain. Burro bananas can be used in both sweet and savoury preparations. Most savoury preparations are within Thai, Filipino, Indian, Latin and Caribbean cuisines.

Burro bananas have very little fat and are low in calories. They are high in potassium and also contain a significant amount of vitamin B, vitamin C, fibre and magnesium. They also contain amounts of phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium.

Our frozen, peeled burro bananas are offered in 1kg vacuum packs. They contain on average 11 to 12 bananas per packet.
