Rough lemon (St Lucia lemon)

Description

Our rough lemons are a rare and unique seeded citrus organically grown on a farm in St Lucia and harvested in the winter months.

The eye-catching uneven exterior is the reason for this variety also being known as ‘rough lemon’ or ‘coarse lemon’.

They are popular across the Caribbean for their thick zest and aromatic juice, which once ripe, is sweeter than other lemon varieties. Being sweeter than the usual commercially available lemons, but still having the usual sour, tart lemon flavour and aroma, rough lemons make a superior lemon juice.

The rough lemons will ripen from green to orange and can be used at all stages of ripeness.

Rough lemons are around two to three times the size of a typical supermarket bought lemon here in the UK.

Some gardeners cultvate rough lemons next to the more attractive meyer lemon, a combination known as ‘Beauty and the Beast’.
