Description

Jocote fruit, pronounced ho-CO-tay, and also known by many other names, grow on deciduous trees in warm tropical climates. They grow on thick irregular branches in clusters, or alone. Unusually, the fruits begin to develop following tiny red flowers before the leaves appear.

The small tantalising fruits which are often unevenly shaped, have a sweet plum-like flavour and soft juicy golden yellow flesh which melts in the mouth. The shiny and waxy red skin is edible however the large central seed is to be discarded.

Young jocote fruits usually ripen from green-yellow to a purple or red colour although some variants of the species will ripen to a yellow color. We also sell yellow jocote, click here to find out more.

Jocote fruit are rich in vitamin C and carbohydrates. They are a source of calcium, phosphorus, iron and a small amount of fibre. They contain carotene, B-complex vitamins, and several important amino acids. Jocotes are high in antioxidants, which help rid the body of free radicals.
